In hindsight, after its long fight to reach A Section, perform there creditably but not achieving finals, the Club was tired. That, combined with losing Chris Hansen to Fitzroy, and Robbie Peers to Hawthorn led to a terrible year on the field in 1977 – the Firsts were winless and the Reserves won only one game. The result was relegation to B Section, and a difficult few years for the Club.
One highlight was Bill Peers selection for the fourth time in the VAFA state team.
