1974 saw the Club having its third year in B Section.
Alec Gardiner joined as senior coach. Alec had had an illustrious AFL (then the VFL) career with Footscray and had coached the Fellows brothers at Box Hill in the VFA.
Mid-way through the season the Firsts were in equal first position having won eight and lost only one; the Reserves were sixth with five wins and four losses. By the end of the season, the Reserves could only manage fifth place, but the Firsts held second place with 14 wins and 4 losses.
Once again Bill Peers was selected to play in the Victorian amateur team.
The Firsts only had to reach the grand final to achieve the holy grail of promotion to A Section. However, in the second semi-final against Monash University Blues despite a 4-1 to 0-2 last quarter they fell agonisingly short.

Thus followed the preliminary final at Collingwood Football Ground against Ivanhoe. Defeat would mean another year in B Section. Things were grim at half time with Old Trinity down 4-7-31 to 8-8-52. However Old Trinity kicked ten goals to two in the second half to run out winners by 34 points:

Whatever the outcome of the grand final the following week, the Club had finally made it to A Section.
The grand final was again at Collingwood Football Ground and again against Monash. At three quarter time Old Trinity was 7 goals ahead and despite a strong fight back from Monash at the start of the final quarter Old Trinity ran out premiers by 10 points:
