The Club also re-formed a thirds team in the VAFA’s Section 2, having disbanded it after one year in 1995. The Thirds has become an intrinsic part of the club with several finals appearances, including a first premiership in 2016. Jenny Cade and her late husband, Mike, were its guardian angels since inception and sons, Stuart, Tim & Jono, all life members of the club, went on to play in excess of 670 games, in all grades, with the majority of these games with this team – a family record, to be sure.
And here we were, back in A Section. Again…..
Glen Hatfield & Andrew Ramsden were selected in the VAFA state team. James Cornell topped the U19 goalkicking with 57 goals.
After nine rounds confidence was high that we finally would not head straight back to B Section, and maybe we were even a chance to play finals? At that stage the Firsts were 4th (6-3), the Reserves were 3rd (7-2), the U19s 4th (6-3) and the 3rds were 10th (3-5-1). Alas, after 18 rounds the Firsts and Reserves finals hopes were shattered – the Firsts finished 5th (11-7) and the Reserves 7th (10-8). However, the U19s saved our pride by finishing 4th with 12 wins and 6 losses. The 3rds ended up 8th (6-8-1).
However, the first semi-final was not to be the U19’s day, losing to Whitefriars by 70 points:
