An Earlier Iteration of the Club

There was a fairly short-lived incarnation of the Club in the early twentieth century. In the 1970’s a Mr R.V. (Toby) Macarthur, who attended Trinity between1909 and 1917, provided us with this account:

“ I was responsible for the formation of the first ever OTGFC in the year the amateurs reformed after the 1914-1918 war (1919 I think). I was captain of the team until I retired some years later, and Cedric (Soapy) Hudson was secretary.

For the first couple of years there was only one section, and we were not very successful. As more clubs joined, we were in B Section in which we were runners up in the first year [1924]
*, but that was our best effort. As the older fellows retired, we found it difficult to recruit from the boys leaving the school, so I recruited half a dozen Old Haileybury boys including the present Judge Leo Dethridge. Thus, Old Haileybury-Trinity was formed and carried on for a short time until Haileybury decided they were strong enough to go it alone.”

* In the 1924 grand final Murrumbeena 16.17.113 defeated Old Trinity 12.10.82.
Old Trinity also made the final four in 1925 & 1929 but lost the first semi-final each time.

Other historical sources put the formation year as 1921 (rather than 1919), the merger with Haileybury as being in 1928, and Haileybury going it alone as 1935.
