Hugo McGlashan and Alex Emery in state team?
What a challenge, and opportunity, to be back in Premier Section.
Maybe we were a bit awestruck in the first game, suffering a 50 point defeat by University Blues.
But we bounced back the next week to beat the fancied Old Xaverians by six goals.
In the next three games we knocked over Uni Blacks by 28 points, St Bernards by 6 and Old Haileybury by 24.
After five games, we were equal top of Premier Section! The word “finals” may even have been whispered.
But, then the bubble burst…. The next nine weeks brought eight losses and a draw and saw us plummet to second last. Relegation in our first year back in Premier was looming ominously.
A win against the odds in round 15 against Old Scotch steadied the ship a little, but two big losses followed, and we went into the last game having to win to be certain of staying in Premier.
St Bernards were the bottom team but had taken some prize scalps in the second half of the season and led us by 21 points at quarter time, 19 at half time and 19 at three quarter time. They kicked an early goal in the last to extend their lead to 25 points. Staring down the barrel, Trinity surged, having the next 11 scoring shots! Seven of them were behinds, but the tenth, a goal at the 24 minute mark, put Trinity ahead for the first time in the match. However, our hopes were dashed when St Bernards kicked another goal at 28 minutes to regain the lead. But there is a god! With literally seconds to play XXXXXXX put one through to seal a heart stopping 5 point victory, and secure our place in Premier in 2027.
At the end of the season Donald McDonald announced his retirement as coach after four seasons. Donald made a huge contribution to the club. The highlight being the 2025 B Grade Premiership which secured our promotion and return to Premiers Section football in 2026.
The Reserves had a tough year, winning just one game in the first nine and finished the season in ninth place with four wins.
In a seven-team section, the U19s had two wins from their first seven games. They finished 6th with 4 wins.
The Thirds also had a disastrous start losing four of their first five games. After 9 games we were 6th (out of 8) and four points and 32% behind fourth. However, we stormed home winning six of the last seven games to finish fourth. Some very welcome finals action ahead.
Mind you, we were playing Ajax who had thrashed us by 71 points in round 9. But the boys were focussed and after trailing by two points at quarter time, took control and led by over six goals at the final break. Despite kicking 0.8 in the last quarter, we finished up comfortable 22 point winners.

All we then had to do was beat Old Xavs and then Old Xavs to win the premiership. Old Xavs had two teams in Thirds Premier, and they sat first and second with 13 wins each. We had beaten one of them and lost narrowly to the other during the season, so had reason to be confident of making a good showing. And so it proved in the first half. Only 11 points down, we were well in the hunt at half time. But Xavs steamrolled us in a 9.2 to 1.1 third quarter, and that was that! Despite outscoring Xavs in the last quarter, the end result was a disappointing 52 point loss.
