Again, back to B Section after a single year in A. Did someone mention yo-yo’s?
Andrew Ramsden was selected in the VAFA state team and named in the best players. Lachlan Kennedy was vice-captain of the VAFA U19 team. Mark Passador kicked 102 goals in the U19s.
Craig Robison was awarded the VAFA Certificate of Merit awarded to individuals going above and beyond the call of duty year after year.
And there they went again! After 9 rounds the Firsts were ladder leaders with 8 wins. The Reserves were 5th (5-4) and the U19s 3rd, also on 5-4. The Firsts slipped in the second half of the year but managed to finish the season in fourth spot with 11 wins and 7 losses. The Reserves ended up fifth (10-8). The U19s held on to third with 14 wins and 4 losses.
If the Firsts were to get back to A Section, they would have to do it the hard way. We defeated North Old Boys In a high scoring first semi-final.

But, alas, our annual pilgrimage back to A Section was not to happen this time as we lost to Old Ivanhoe in the preliminary final.

An observer from the preliminary final who should remain anonymous (Ian Jervis!), reported that “We had an abundance of quality players and as improbable as it sounds today, and to President Andrew Kennedy’s great chagrin, Andrew Ramsden and Mark Passador played off the bench in the 1998 B Section preliminary final at Sandringham which we just lost to Old Ivanhoe despite Allibon’s unbelievable last quarter in his 262nd and final game. Hearsay has it that Kennedy actually confronted the coaches just before half time in an uncharacteristic fit of apoplexy! Who’s to know…..!”
Sadly, even the U19s couldn’t salvage some joy from the year, losing their first semi-final.
